I created the Qualitative Data Analysis Workshop because, honestly, I was sick and tired of hearing all the people who were frustrated with analyzing their qualitative data manually.
When I first learned qualitative data analysis as a graduate student 30 years ago, we were taught to code transcripts manually. I hated it. It was grueling and time-intensive. Having note cards and sticky notes all over your apartment wall was ridiculous. There had to be a better way.
Several years later when I started conducting qualitative and quantitative research inside corporate America, it was a different ball game. Qualitative software had evolved significantly and was much easier to do than hand-coding and much faster. I became so proficient with qualitative data analysis that I was creating reports with video verbatim comments instead of simply text. It became all the rage at Office Depot, where I worked. It was easier to make a case for a new product or service with video verbatim comments inside a PowerPoint slide instead of just text.
However, as a member of a number of large Facebook groups whose members are doctoral students, I noticed that many doctoral students were still manually coding their qualitative data. To make matters worse, people who had already obtained their doctorate were telling the students that manual coding was the best way to code. WHAT?!!!! This is Madness!!
I had to do something. So, I created the Qualitative Data Analysis Workshop. I've been successful with teaching workshops for students using SPSS and R. My website, SPSSVideoTutor.com has licensed my video tutorials to Walden University, and several universities currently use my video tutorials as a part of their statistics classes.
So, I decided to do the same with Qualitative Data Analysis using QDA Miner Lite. I'm going to use the same workshop formula I use with my statistics students, where I don't assume any prior knowledge, and I walk you step-by-step through every minute detail of the qualitative data analysis process. So buckle up and let us bring you into the 21st century regarding qualitative data analysis. Drop your Post-it notes, highlighters, and large papers on the wall, and let's get to work.
The workshop sessions are about 1 hour long and are conducted every week day
Yes. If you have questions about content that is being covered during the live workshop. You can also asks questions about your own data, if it is related to what is being covered during the live workshop (VIP Only).
A new workshop series begins every Monday at 8 pm Eastern Standard Time (GMT -5). The workshops are conducted Monday through Friday only.
Yes. All workshop sessions are video recorded. However, only those who upgrade to VIP status can access the video replays at a later time, up to 12 months later.
No. We assume no prior knowledge of qualitative data analysis, including coding or any qualitative software. There are pre-workshop videos for beginners that you receive after you register for the workshop sessions. They cover all the basic steps and concepts that you need to get the most out of the qualitative data analysis workshop.
The Qualitative Data Analysis Workshop - Level 1 (QDAW1) assumes no prior knowledge of qualitative data analysis or software. So, during this pre-workshop period, we will show you all the steps you need to take to prepare to analyze your qualitative data. The pre-workshop trainings consists of four 10-minute videos. They are taught in plain English and contain step-by-step instructions so there is guessing about what you need to do or how to do it. You can complete the pre-workshop training at your own pace. The pre-workshop trainings is free, and covers the following topics:
- How to download QDA Miner Lite (free software), - How to install QDA Miner Lite, - How to transcribe your interviews, - How to edit your transcripts, and How to enter your transcripts into QDA Miner Lite.
Level 1 codes are the codes you link to respondent comments that address your research questions. Level 1 codes serve as the foundation of your Thematic Analysis. You will learn to create codes inside QDA Miner Lite. You will also learn how to connect codes to text passages that represent the meaning of the code. We will analyze transcript #1.

Once you've completed level 1 coding of your transcripts, the next step is to analyze the level 1 codes and develop themes. You will learn how to create themes from your level 1 codes. You will also learn how to merge your level 1 codes together to create themes (level 2 codes).
